Cold War Museum in Lithuania
You will visit museum on the site of a former Soviet nuclear missile base that is situated deep in the heart of the Žemaitija National Park. There’s a small exhibition on the history of the Cold War, particularly on how it played out in the Baltic countries, and on the construction and role of the base. The highlight, however, is the chance to poke around inside one of the former missile bunkers.
Built in the 1960s in secret from the Lithuanian people, the base had enough firepower to flatten most of Europe, and may have played a role in the Cuban missile crisis. Missile base had four R12 (SS-4) middle range nuclear missiles.
You will have thrilling experience walking in low ceiling corridors, visiting cells where Soviet army officers were targetting nuclear missiles to the Western Europe countries. You will enter one of the silos where nuclear missile was installed and prepared to be launched.
You will also be able to visit the underground and the missile silos labyrinth and get knowledge of the Cold War period, propaganda strategies, consequences of the nuclear explosions and the life in the military base.
