DAY 2: Bauska – Rundāle – Jūrmala

This day we will start with excursion to majestic Bauska Castle that stands upon a peninsula at the junction of the River Mūsa and the River Mēmele  where they join to become the second biggest river in Latvia, the River Lielupe. The oldest part of Bauska Castle is a spectacular 15th century Livonian Order fortress. The newest part of Bauska Castle, the residence of the Duke of Courland, was built at the end of the 16th century.

After we will visit splendid Rundāle Palace is a true baroque pearl in an untouched Latvian scenery. The so-called Latvian Versailles was built over two periods: 1736–1740 and 1764–1768. Rundāle Palace was designed by the celebrated architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who is also the author of the famous Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. During the excursion, you will explore not only the palace itself, but also its French garden.

In the afternoon we will take a look at Jūrmala, the most popular resort in Latvia. During the excursion, we will go for a walk on Jomas Street, which is a kilometre-long pedestrian street, and see Jūrmala from above from the Dzintari Forest Park observation tower.

Day 3: Turaida – Sigulda – Cēsis

We will start this exciting day by visiting Turaida Museum Reserve which has a large territory full of artistic and historical pearls. The name Turaida means ‘God’s garden’ in Livonian. This exciting excursion will take you on a journey through 1000 years of Latvian history. The highlight of the excursion will be the breath taking view of the primeval valley of the River Gauja from the castle tower. Built in the 13th century, the big round tower, or Bergfried, is the main part of the castle, hence the name Main Tower.

Lunch near Turaida.

In the afternoon we will travel to Cēsis – not only one of the oldest but also one of the most inherently Latvian towns. No matter the season, visitors of Cēsis appreciate the historical and cultural heritage, the beauty of nature and the quiet rhythm of a small-town life. With a history of more than 800 years, Cēsis is one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in the Baltics. You will explore this small yet surprising town together with our guide. The Cēsis Medieval Castle with the park is a great place for enjoying nature and history. We will continue our tour to Alsunga – the capital of Suiti culture. The small Suiti region means a lot in the context of Latvian culture: its own national dress and dialect, more than 52,000 recorded folk songs, a very special and intricate wedding ceremony and other traditions that Suiti still honor to this day. This phenomenon is like no other in Latvia. In 2009, UNESCO recognized it as intangible cultural heritage of global significance. In 2009, Suiti Cultural Space was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
